Installing  Red  Hat  Linux  9.0

   
1.

Changing Boot Priority:   By Pressing [DEL] at the time of booting you can enter into CMOS setup. set the first boot priority option to CD- ROM and save it .Restart the system.

2.

Now, insert disc 1 of the Linux O.S. to start installation. Since , it is a bootable cd. System will directly start Linux setup.

3.

To start in the graphical mode, Press [ENTER].

4.

Skip the media check. Press Continue.

5.

Choose the language : US English & Click Next.

6.

Keyboard : US English .. Click Next.

7.

Mouse Detection: (Auto detected) Click Next

8.

Install type : New / Upgrade .Choose new installation.  : personal desktop / Workstation / Server / Custom.  Choose anyone according to our application.

9.

Partitioning Hard drives : Choose manually partition with disk druid option.

10.

i) see for free space available (min. 3GB) .if the free space is not available [DELETE] any partition on which you want to install Linux.

 

ii) Click [NEW] to make new partitions.

 

iii) Create a SWAP partition [choose SWAP in file type option in new menu tab] .. allocate space double to that of your RAM.

 

iv) Now, in mount point tab in new menu option, allocate the space>=3 GB. here, set  the file type Ext3. ..Click fill upto ____ MB. if any  error occurs click continue anyway.

 

v) click next.

Boot Loader :  Set boot loader GRUB ( Default one ). click next.

12.

Network Configuration : if  you have LAN or NIC card. you can configure or just skip this step. we can configure it after installtion.

13.

Firewall Configuration :  set High - Internet; Medium - LAN, TCP/ IP; No firewall - LAN, standalone PC.

14.

Language Support : Choose default US English + Extra as needed. like  English [India], Hindi, Marathi, Telgu.

15.

Time Zone : Choose default  ( Asia / Culcutta).

16.

Set root Password.

17.

Enable shadow & MD5 Passwords.

18.

Select Packages : click details to add more packages.

19.

Click Next to begin installation. for installation typically it takes 30-60 minutes.

20.

Creating boot disk : insert a floppy to make a bootable disk.

21.

Configure Video H/W : if your video card is not detected properly, select it from the list or click next.

22.

Monitor Configuration : if your monitor is not detected, search in the list and click next. if it is not in the list ,choose the default probed monitor type.

23.

X Configuration (Color & Resolution ) : set it 24 bit or 32 bit color scheme. and 800x600 or 1024x864 resolution.( automatically detected...default ).

24.

finish or exit and restart the system.

   

  POST INSTALLATIONS :

1.

A welcome screen appears.

2.

Click next to continue and complete the configuration.

3.

To create another user. give username and password. this is a restricted user account.

 

   MOUNTING AND UNMOUNTING FILE SYSTEM :

  1. To access  the VFAT (FAT32) partitions on windows, you have to mount it firstly.

  2. In [ /mnt ] directory ,first make the directories in according with the volume label and the no. of partitions on windows.

  3. edit the fstab file [ /etc/fstab ] as below .save this file and restart the computer.

    /dev/hda1          /mnt/driveC     vfat    auto  defaults 0 0   

    /dev/hda2          /mnt/driveD     vfat    auto  defaults 0 0
